House passes school safety bill amid student protests

Students also spoke out against gun violence, carried signs, and chanted.

The House on Wednesday easily passed a measure to strengthen school safety and security, a vote that comes one month after the mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla.

The legislation provides funding for schools to develop crisis intervention teams and purchase technology and equipment to improve communication between law enforcement, students and school officials.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. said on Tuesday he is "anxious" to pass significant school safety legislation and another measure called "Fix NICs" to improve reporting to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

The House voted 407-10 to pass the Students, Teachers and Officers Preventing School Violence Act (the STOP Act), with five Democrats and five Republicans opposing the measure.

All members of the Nevada congressional delegation voted to pass the bill. "And that's what (this bill) will do", Florida Rep. John Rutherford, a former sheriff who sponsored the STOP bill, said Wednesday.

Though the bill passed with bipartisan support, House Democrats on Wednesday complained that lawmakers are not doing enough to stop gun violence.

As schoolchildren staged a walkout across the U.S. to press for tougher gun controls, Congress planned to take modest steps to prevent violence in classrooms - even as they continued squabbling over broader action to curb gun rights. By building a culture in which students and teachers understand the importance of identifying possible threats of violence, this bill can help save lives and help keep our communities safe.

President Donald Trump reiterated his support last weekend for a bill by Sen.

Nonetheless, House GOP leaders continue to point to the Senate as the place for further action. "The fact is, we know the kinds of steps that have to be taken to do that", he said.

Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., is an original co-sponsor of the Senate bill. "As a father of three, I understand the urgent need to stop school violence and do all we can to protect our children".

"It will not be the only bill, because in the Senate we also have the work that this House did back in December, the National Instant Criminal Background Check", House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said, referring to a measure called Fix NICS created to strengthen existing reporting requirements to the background check system. The legislation had more than 75 co-sponsors from both parties.

Since the Florida shooting, the Republican-led Congress and the Trump administration have considered measures to curb gun violence while trying to avoid crossing the powerful National Rifle Association lobby group, or threatening the right to bear arms enshrined in the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment.

In a floor speech, Sen.

"This important bill will help stop school violence before it happens", said Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA-ILA.

Cortez Masto recalled the October 1 tragedy in Las Vegas when 58 people were killed and 500 injured "at the hands of a madman with an assault rifle".

One parents who attended the demonstration said she feared for her child's safety.
