Iran's foreign minister arrives in Pakistan on ties

In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Dr. Javad Zarif, who called on him on Monday, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan's desire to enhance mutually beneficial economic cooperation with Iran including bilateral trade, investments and commercial interaction.

During his three-day visit, which began Sunday, Zarif will hold talks with the Pakistani prime minister, foreign minister, interior minister, parliament speaker and army chief. Both foreign ministers are expected to speak at a joint press conference.

He said cooperation between state bank of Pakistan and Bank Milli Islami will also be promoted.

While addressing the Pak-Iran Business Forum on Monday, the Iranian foreign minister shared that there has been a 50 per cent increase in trade between Pakistan and Iran since past year.

Zarif also lauded Pakistan's efforts to minimise illegal cross-border activities by strengthening border management across the border shared with Iran.

Zarif's visit "is part of regular bilateral political consultations held between both sides", said Faisal.

Before Zarif's arrival, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi was quoted by Iranian media as having said that the Iranian minister would review issues of mutual interest with a special focus on expansion of economic and trade relations between the two neighbours.

He is visiting Pakistan in response to his Pakistani counterpart Khawaja Asif's visit to Iran last September.

The neighbouring country's top diplomat is in Pakistan for talks with the Pakistani leadership during his visit.
