Jerry Jones, NFL resolve league's attempt for Cowboys to reimburse legal fees

The NFL and Jerry Jones have resolved their dispute over legal fees "to the satisfaction of all parties".

Jones had an appeal hearing with commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The league was seeking more than $2 million in legal fees stemming from the federal court case with Elliott over his six-game suspension for violating the league's personal-conduct policy and Jones' opposition to commissioner Roger Goodell's contract extension.

The NFL had used a part of the league's constitution that an owner bringing litigation against the league or other owners would be subject to paying back the legal fees.

"After a hearing with the Commissioner and the Finance Committee, the matter of the reimbursement of legal fees has been resolved to the satisfaction of all parties", an National Football League spokesman said in a statement. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, it was resolved by Jones writing a check for $2 million.

He never followed through with the suit but it resulted in the exchange of several letters between Jones' attorney and those representing the owners of the compensation committee. That came a few days after Goodell assessed the financial penalties for Jones' lawsuit to overturn the suspension of Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott, and for a lawsuit Jones threatened to stop Goodell's newly approved contract.

Goodell had discretion whether to demand repayment, and the commissioner also ruled on Jones' appeal. Jones said that was unrelated to him fighting Goodell's extension a year ago, but that's hard to believe.
