Justin Trudeau visiting Hamilton to support steel workers

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland is heading to Washington on Tuesday for two days of talks with Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer as well as key congressional leaders.

Trump's eagerness to seal the deal of NAFTA came months after the United States and Canada were on the loggerheads on this issue.

"(That would) ensure the vitality of United States and North American manufacturing industries and. protect the economic and national security of the United States".

Canada, the top supplier of steel and aluminium to the USA market, has been temporarily exempted from the tariffs, along with Mexico.

"We will continue working toward securing a definite and permanent exemption from those tariffs", Trudeau said earlier.

Trudeau is also brushing off the idea that Canada might be bullied into a deal.

"This week, I will travel across Canada to meet with the workers and businesses at the heart of our country's world-class steel and aluminum industries". He is scheduled to tour steel mills in Hamilton, Sault Ste.

The steel tariff threat was seen by many to be an attempt by the Trump administration to pressure Canada and Mexico to complete the NAFTA talks - giving in to other USA demands or giving up some of their own -rather than risk the punishing steel and aluminum duties.

Trudeau accused China of flooding global markets with cheap steel on Monday, saying Canada has already taken steps to prevent "dumping". We also know they face real challenges, including concerns around global overcapacity and our integrated North American market.

He said the government needs to monitor steel imports more closely so that if shipment volumes are rising, it can react quickly to stop Canada from becoming a dumping ground into the US market.

Later, Canada and Mexico were exempted from the imposition of the trade tariffs.

Canada is the biggest supplier of steel and aluminium to the United States.

Brazil has said it will seek exemption from the newly imposed tariffs.

NAFTA talks might now enter an intense phase: "President Trump emphasized the importance of quickly concluding the ongoing NAFTA negotiations", said a readout from the White House on Monday's call with Trudeau.

Azevedo said Brazil was "exploring alternatives" for responding to the tariffs.

Azevedo said he did not know if Brazil would resort to the WTO's dispute resolution mechanism but said Brazil was not ruling it out.
