'Millennials' rail card for 26-30s launches trial period

'Millennials' rail card for 26-30s launches trial period

If you are a traveller aged between 26 and 30, you can now avail 33 per cent off rail tickets with the new digital "millennial" railcard, which is going on sale nationwide tomorrow, 13 March.

The discount cards were released at 7am on a "first come first served" basis by the Rail Delivery Group. They also reassured customers at 10:20am that there were still railcards available, however there were still website difficulties due to the demand.

The limited number of railcards are being made available as part of a trial which is created to assess the take-up of cards and the impact they have on revenue and passenger numbers.

But dozens of passengers took to social media on Tuesday morning to express their frustration at being unable to use the website selling the cards. However, only 10,000 went on sale and cash-strapped young people complained they were more hard to get hold of than Glastonbury tickets.

It costs £30 each year and saves passengers a third off most fares. "Sort out your website to make it fair!"

So, that has prompted quite a flurry this morning, with National Railcards Twitter saying "the whole team" was working at getting the website back on track. "Please bear with us".

Tom Drury, from London, wrote: "The launch of the new railcard is a shambles". There will be a £12 minimum on tickets between 4.30am and 10am, excluding weekends and public holidays. There is now a limited number of cards available while the scheme is trialled to assess the impact on revenue and passenger numbers, however, it is expected it will eventually be rolled out across the UK.

Chancellor Philip Hammond said in his Budget speech in November that the railcards would give "4.5 million more young people a third off their rail fares".

The majority of people would not be able to get additional discounts between the age of 25 and 60, when a senior railcard kicks in.
