NCAA tournament preview: No. 16 Radford

NCAA tournament preview: No. 16 Radford

Radford, the Big South champion, is making its third tournament appearance and first since 2009.

Two programs looking for their first NCAA Tournament victory meet when LIU Brooklyn takes on Radford in the First Four on Tuesday night in Dayton, Ohio, with the victor moving on to face top seed Villanova two days later in the East Region at Pittsburgh.

Ed Polite Jr. doesn't worry one bit when he sees a teammate come off the bench.

The last two years, SportsLine's computer simulation correctly predicted nine out of 12 double-digit NCAA Tournament upsets in the first round with their computer algorithm.

Radford didn't play its prettiest game, but the team from rural southwest Virginia will celebrate briefly before heading to Pittsburgh to play No. 1 seed Villanova on Thursday.

LIU was causing problems for Radford with a fullcourt trap they started using halfway through the second half and they cut the lead to just one with 5 minutes left. So we just had to remain focused and go with the game plan.

Hernandez, who scored 32 points in LIU's win at Wagner in the NEC title game, shot 3-for-11 from the field and scored just eight points on the night.

Radford: At times the Highlanders looked like they didn't want it, either, but they played better in the second half on the back of Jones, who had seven assists to go with his double-double.

The game was played with all the intensity of an NCAA Championship game. And when he hit that shot at the end of the first half, we told our guys, hey, understand now he's coming at you with both barrels blazing in the second half.

Labeled as a "First Four" matchup, the victor of this game will be rewarded with the No. 16 seed in the East Regional bracket and meet No. 1 Villanova.
