Packers sign Muhammad Wilkerson to 1-year deal worth up to $8M

Hours after agreeing to a contract with tight end Jimmy Graham the Packers have reportedly agreed to a deal with pass rusher Mo Wilkerson.

Now Wilkerson will come back home to face the Jets when the Packers come to MetLife Stadium this season.

ESPN's Rob Demovsky, a Cover 2 contributor, was first to report the news Tuesday night. Wilkerson has remained a solid contributor in recent years, but the Jets didn't feel his play justified his salary.

He'll also get to do playing with his old defensive coordinator Pettine, who was on the Jets with Rex Ryan when Wilkerson was drafted by NY back in 2011.

But Wilkerson had already visited Green Bay, and he was on his way to Washington. Coach Mike McCarthy fired defensive coordinator Dom Capers in January after nine seasons.

With Wilkerson now in the fold, the Packers have a formidable defensive line that also includes Mike Daniels and Kenny Clark.

New Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst indicated he might use free agency more than predecessor Ted Thompson did, and that's coming to fruition early in the period. The bigger positions of need are at cornerback and outside linebacker.

That seemed to change, however, when he was signed to a five-year, $86 million contract extension before the 2016 campaign, according to Spotrac.

NY signed Wilkerson, the team's first-round pick in the 2011 draft, to a five-year extension that included $53 million in guarantees after his Pro Bowl season in 2015, but it did not fare out as planned. The longtime Jet recorded just eight sacks in the past two seasons, and he struggled to consistently generate pressure.
