SC extends deadline for linking Aadhaar to mobile, bank accounts

The five-judge constitution bench headed by chief justice Dipak Misra said that the government can not insist for mandatory Aadhaar linkage in relation to tatkal passports, bank accounts and mobile phones.

Chief Justice Dipak Misra had on 7 March said it may not be possible to decide by 31 March the batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar Act.

The deadline has been extended until the disposal of Aadhaar case in the Supreme Court.

On December 15 a year ago, the apex court had set March 31, 2018 as the deadline to link the 12-digit unique number with a range of services.

However, the deadline for subsidies and government programs remains March 31. However, the deadline for subsidies, benefits will remain March 31.

It was passed on 11 March 2016 by the Lok Sabha.

It was submitted that the Rajya Sabha has an important role to play, and by introducing the Bill as a Money Bill, its role was bypassed.

At this point, Attorney General KK Venugopal sought to clarify that this requirement of Aadhaar was only for issuance of "tatkal" passports.

In wake of the March-31 deadline, banks, and mobile service providers have been repeatedly calling and messaging customers to link the 12-digit Aadhaar number to avail the uninterrupted services.

This deadline also been extended for those who apply for passports.

The Centre was also planning to make it mandatory to link Aadhaar with driving license and voter ID cards, among other things. The SC said that the mandatory Aadhaar linking with bank accounts and mobile phones will stand extended indefinitely till the judgment is pronounced.
