Special edition Bullitt Ford Mustang confirmed for Australia

Ford is preparing rolling out the red carpet for one of Hollywood's greatest action heroes.

The film Bullitt is best known for its 10-minute chase sequence, in which McQueen's character, detective Frank Bullitt steers his 1968 Mustang GT 390 fastback in pursuit of a pair of hitmen, driving a menacing black Dodger Charger R/T, through the streets of San Francisco. To that end, an as yet unspecified number of right-hand drive Mustang Bullitts will come to United Kingdom from this summer.

Built to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the blockbuster starring Steve McQueen, in which the Hollywood heart throb drove an original 1968 Mustang Fastback in one of the most legendary auto chases to ever grace the silver screen, the new-generation Mustang Bullitt was first revealed at the 2018 Detroit motor show in January and confirmed for right-hand drive production at the Geneva motor show today.

Ford and the Steve McQueen estate recently donated the first new Mustang Bullitt VIN 001 for auction, raising $300,000 for charity.

"We're excited to offer Australian buyers the Mustang Bullitt, especially on the 50th anniversary of the legendary film".

Ford has confirmed that the 475bhp Mustang Bullitt will go on sale in the United Kingdom and Europe in 2018, ahead of the car's appearance at the Geneva motor show. And as a hat-tip to the original car's interior, the gear shift features a white cue ball knob. And if you've never watched the 10min chase scene, you can below... The movie's nearly 10 minute-long sequence followed McQueen chasing down two hitmen through the streets of San Francisco. There's also an uprated active valve performance exhaust system, said to give the Mustang its "signature burble".

Based on the 5.0-litre Mustang, the Bullitt gets 458bhp and 388lb ft - 14bhp more than the standard Mustang's 444bhp, but 17bhp down on the 475bhp US-spec vehicle.

It's powered by a tuned version of the Mustang's 5.0-litre V8 engine. A set of 19-inch "torque thrust" alloy wheels are made to match, in black. Ford has given the Bullitt minimal badging; only the Bullitt logo on the rear centre of the vehicle - a throwback to the older Mustangs' fuel caps - is visible on the exterior. Ford says you can also order your Bullitt Mustang in Shadow Black, but really, you shouldn't. Of benefit, we already get the Performance Pack as standard.
