Storm warning: Kerala on high alert after depression in Arabian Sea deepens

After cyclone Ockhi ravaged the southern coast, fishermen claimed that they were not given any warning by the state fisheries department.

In the case of Ockhi, the IMD had issued similar bulletins noting how a depression formed over the Comorin area had quickly developed into a deep depression and a cyclonic storm in a matter of few hours.

Wind speed over the Lakshadweep area and the adjoining southeast Arabian Sea is also predicted to gradually increase on Wednesday and Thursday, at 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said a team from the National Disaster Response Force would be moved to Thrissur to assist the State authorities in emergency response. It indicates possible danger to ships stationed at the port. The IMD has also warned of rough seas with waves likely to climb of up to 3 metre high. The depression over southeast Arabian Sea adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean has moved towards north-northwestwards with a speed of about 20 kmph.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall between Tuesday and Thursday (March 13 and March 15) in coastal areas of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and in Lakshadweep.

Kerala's chief secretary Paul Antony met different departmental heads Tuesday morning to review preparations.

It has maintained the outlook of rough sea conditions and squall and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off south Tamil Nadu and the Kerala coast, Comorin-Maldives area, Lakshadweep area and the Gulf of Mannar area during the next two days.

The Kerala government sounded an alert along its coast in view of a well marked low pressure over the Indian Ocean, asking officials to ensure return of fishermen engaged in deep-sea fishing. The district collectors will ensure that coastal relief shelters are open and Tahsildars shall keep the keys of the relief shelters, coastal control rooms will function round the clock till March 15.
