Terror Police Investigate 'Unexplained' Death Of Russian Exile Nikolai Glushkov

A Russian exile, Nikolai Glushkov has been found dead at his home in London just over a week after a nerve attack on a former double agent. Police said he committed suicide but Glushkov told The Guardian in 2013 that he suspected foul play.

But there was "no evidence", it said, "to suggest a link to the incident in Salisbury", adding that the death is being treated as "unexplained".

Counter-terror police said it was in charge of the probe "as a precaution because of associations that the man is believed to have had", a spokesman said.

Glushkov's death came a week and a day after fellow Russian exile Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were critically injured in a nerve agent attack in Salisbury.

Police did not release the man's name saying the man had not been formally identified. His family has been informed and a post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

Nikolai Glushkov, 68, was discovered dead late on Monday at an address in Clarence Avenue in suburban south-west London.

"The death is now being treated as unexplained", he said.

Berezovsky was found dead in March 2013 with a scarf tied around his neck in the bathroom of a luxury mansion in Ascot, an affluent English town near the Queen's Windsor Castle, west of London.

The death of Glushkov, who worked for Berezovsky's auto company as well as Russian state airline Aeroflot in the 1990s, was confirmed by his lawyer on Russia's Business FM radio.

Glushkov received political asylum in Britain after serving five years in prison in Russian Federation for money laundering and fraud, the Guardian newspaper reported.

Speaking to the Guardian at the time, Glushkov said he was extremely sceptical that Berezovsky took his own life, claiming that he was "killed".
