Tillerson's leaving may presage more hawkish, unilateral United States foreign policy

Tillerson's leaving may presage more hawkish, unilateral United States foreign policy

A believer in regime change in North Korea, it is unlikely that Pompeo will endorse the summit that Trump announced last week.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, saying he and Tillerson have "a different mindset".

When the announcement was made at the White House, Mr Tillerson was thousands of miles away - seeking to smooth over relations with African nations Mr Trump had reportedly dismissed as "shitholes".

A high-level Indian delegation led by Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale and Defense Secretary G Mohan Kumar were scheduled to be in United States for a series of preparatory meetings with their American counterparts for the next month's dialogue.

Politico reported in February a fuming Mr Tillerson said there could not be "four secretaries of state", referencing what he saw as intrusion by Mr Kushner, UN ambassador Nikki Haley and national security adviser H.R. McMaster.

"With Mike, Mike Pompeo, we have a very similar thought process".

Pompeo's best chance for success lies in persuading his boss that he is not, as Trump once said, "the only one that matters" in foreign policy.

Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker said that while he didn't expect Tillerson's firing, he also wasn't surprised by it, adding he does not have a well-informed opinion yet of Pompeo.

While some opponents lambasted the former Kansas lawmaker for his posturing on a House panel that investigated Hillary Clinton and the 2012 Benghazi attack, some Democrats held out hope he could lead a State Department turnaround.

It was only in October that Trump publicly rebuked Tillerson for his efforts with Pyongyang, tweeting he was "wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man..." And now we're going away from that so we have to think that that's a negative development.

"He is aligned more on numerous President's views and will likely assist in strengthening ties with Congress", he said.

Tillerson has pushed Trump to remain in the agreement and had been pursuing a delicate strategy with European allies and others to try to improve or augment it to Trump's liking. "I believe the Chinese would be somewhat cautious, they'll wait and see what comes out of it", he said.

Tillerson's support for the Iran nuclear deal and his cautious approach to diplomatic affairs, often put him at odds with Trump.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo is set to become the next secretary of state, President Donald Trump announced Tuesday.

Replacing Tillerson is head of the CIA Mike Pompeo.

Others, though, expressed concern that Pompeo's views on foreign policy fall more closely in line with Trump than did Tillerson's.

One senior White House official said that when Trump made the decision to meet with Kim while Tillerson was in Africa, an aide asked if Tillerson should weigh in on the matter.

And Tillerson never really seemed at ease in a public role.

The Trump approach has been one of uncertainty and unpredictability and certainly we will see a little bit of the same in Pompeo taking over State Department.

Another issue now in limbo is the negotiations to strengthen the Iran nuclear deal. "He went on to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives with a proven record of working across the aisle". Between 2003 and 2005, Haspel oversaw the agency's clandestine prison in Thailand where suspected terrorists Abu Zubayadah and Abd al Rahim al-Nashiri were waterboarded, current and former USA intelligence officials said.

"I've talked to the president many, many times and I know Secretary Tillerson".

Tillerson's ouster bodes ill for those in Trump's administration who were not a part of his campaign team, business life or family. The relationship has been very good. "There's a certain amount of lack of respect there, I think".
