Team Sky's Michal Kwiatkowski secured overall victory at Tirreno-Adriatico following the final stage time trial.

Poland's Michal Kwiatkowski, center, victor of the Tirreno Adriatico cycling race, celebrates on the podium with second placed Damiano Caruso, left, and third placed Britain's Geraint Thomas, in San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy, Tuesday, March 13, 2018.

"Tirreno-Adriatico is the most important stage win in my career so far".

Kittel edged Peter Sagan, who had been held up by a crash with about seven kilometers left of the 153-kilometer (95-mile) sixth stage from Numana to Fano.

Sagan was also involved in the crash, siting directly on the wheel of Gaviria, yet miraculously managed to stay upright, finishing second on the stage.

Kittel's other stage win was for the sprinters on Thursday. Today, I was hopeful that I could repeat past year or go a bit better. Seconds later I heard it was Gaviria. My coach said it's normal that I struggled in longer days like the Scarponi memorial stage (stage 5). "I'm confident in Team Sky to support me to try and win Milan-Sanremo again on Saturday". We controlled the race.

Kwiatkowski started the individual time trial with an advantage of three seconds over Damiano Caruso and he was quicker than the Italian rider at every time check. "I was looking at the best times on the course and was thinking, 'What do I need to aim for?'" "I didn't make it but, at the end of the day, we have to be very happy with the stage and keep focus on tomorrow's time trial for a ideal end".
