United Airlines in new dog drama

A family moving from OR to Kansas claims a mix-up with United Airlines resulted in their dog being sent to Japan by mistake. The parents traveled with their two kids, and their 10-year-old German shepherd named Irgo, who flew in a kennel in the plane's cargo on a separate flight.

Since Irgo is a large breed, he had to be transported by kennel in the cargo hold of the plane.

Irgo eventually made it to Japan and will be shipped back to Kansas City after visiting with a veterinarian. In a statement, the airline said the dog's death was "a tragic accident that should never have occurred".

A family wants answers after their dog was put on the wrong flight and went overseas. In his place, she found a Great Dane that was supposed to be en route to Japan.

The mother said United told her it don't know how the dogs were mixed up. "The fact that we don't have any idea is the most frustrating part".

Joseph and Kara Swindle, along with their two young children, were flying from OR to Kansas City Tuesday so they could sign the paperwork for their new house in Wichita, Kansas, the next morning. They have our paperwork here saying that this is the correct dog, but we know it's not.

"At this point, all I can do is be hopeful that my dog is going to be okay and return safely". "I would love to know what they are thinking", she said of the other family. I can't cry anymore.

"She was like, 'Oh my god, that's not my dog!'" Asher said. "I've cried too much".

A United spokesman told our sister station the incident happened during a connection error in Denver. We have notified our costumers that their pets have arrived safely and will arrange to return the pets to them as soon as possible.

First, there was a report on Tuesday (March 13) that a puppy died on a United Airlines flight after a flight attendant demanded that the dog's owner stow him inside the overhead compartment for the duration of a three-hour flight.

The US Department of Transportation tracks incidents of death or injury to animals that are transported on major US air carriers. The flight attendant reportedly told witnesses later that she did not realize there was a dog in the bag.
