University staff reject union deal on pensions

University staff reject union deal on pensions

Breakthrough talks between Universities UK (UUK) and the University and College Union (UCU) have provided fresh hope that a resolution to the strike action can be found.

There would also be an independent re-evaluation of the size of the pension scheme's deficit.

University staff opposed to the deal announced on Monday evening have pushed for a more "decisive victory".

Widespread disruption to the teaching timetable prompted over 5,000 Durham students to demand compensation for lost contact hours, amid the fourth week of industrial action by the UCU.

The newspaper said the interim arrangement would come into effect from April next year if the parties agree to it.

Contributions from universities and staff would increase during the transition period, to 19.3 per cent for employers and 8.7 per cent for employees (currently 18 per cent and 8 per cent respectively).

However, a number of UCU branches and members have taken to social media to voice their opposition to the proposals, urging their leaders to reject the offer reached following six days of conciliation talks at Acas. In our opinion we should keep going and throw UUK's offer out all together.

University staff are staging a protest at the UCU headquarters in north London today to show their dissatisfaction with the interim arrangement - where higher contributions would need to be paid for three years from April 2019.

An agreement was last night reached between lecturers' leaders and university officials over their bitter pensions dispute - potentially paving the way for strike action to be called off.

Staff at 64 universities in the United Kingdom have been intermittently striking since 22 February, against proposals to change the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) from a "defined benefit" scheme, which gives workers a guaranteed income in retirement, to a "defined contribution" scheme, in which pensions are subject to fluctuations in the stock market.

But this has been rejected by a meeting of the union's representatives - with warnings that it was "completely unacceptable" after weeks of strikes and loss of earnings.
