Vladimir Putin unveils multiple new nuclear weapons in Russia

Russian Federation has a new array of nuclear-capable weapons including an intercontinental ballistic missile that renders defense systems "useless", President Vladimir Putin announced Thursday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that Moscow is developing a new range of supersonic nuclear weapons that can not be intercepted by antimissile systems.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he aims to cut his country's "unacceptable" poverty rate in half over the next six years, in a state of the nation address on Thursday.

Mr Putin also announced that a bridge to the Crimean peninsula would be open within the next couple of months.

"No other country in the world has this kind of arsenal, there were absolutely no secrets about it", said Putin. "Precisely, backwardness is main threat and our enemy". In its Nuclear Posture Review, the Trump administration lays out plans to deploy a smaller-yield warhead on its Trident submarines and a sea-based nuclear-armed cruise missile.

Pentagon officials also said that Russia's new cruise missiles were believed to still be in testing, not ready for deployment, and that recent test launches by Russia had ended in failure, crashing in the Russian Arctic.

"You have failed to contain Russian Federation", he said in a reference to what he described as Western efforts to impede Russia's development with sanctions and military deployments. He emphasized that the cruise missile is "invulnerable to any existing or prospective air and missile defense systems".

He added that the names for the two weapons had not yet been chosen and suggested the country's defence ministry could run a nationwide contest to pick the names.

"These weapons that are discussed have been in development a very long time", she told a news briefing, without addressing any of Putin's specific claims of new capabilities. He said tests of a compact nuclear reactor that took years were completed successfully in December.

In his "State of the Nation" address, Putin said his claims about new nuclear weapons are meant to counter what he charged were provocations in the NPR.

White told Pentagon reporters that US missile defense has never been about Russian Federation.

A video that accompanied his statement featured a MiG-31 fighter jet carrying a bulky missile under its fuselage and then launching it during a test flight.

Putin claimed that Russian Federation conducted a test of the new cruise missile last previous year.

Another new weapon, called Avangard, is an intercontinental hypersonic missile that would fly at 20 times the speed of sound and strike its targets "like a meteorite, like a fireball", he said.

"It can attack any target, through the North or South Pole, it is a powerful weapon and no missile defense system will be able to withstand", the strongman boasted.
