White House convenes donor nations for Gaza conference

"The situation in Gaza must be solved for humanitarian reasons and for ensuring the security of Egypt and Israel", the White House said in a statement Wednesday.

After the meeting, Mr. Greenblatt hailed it as a successful one in his tweet, "Many thanks to my friends from Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, United Arab Emirates & Israel at the White House for the Gaza Conference".

The Trump administration brought together Israel and a number of Arab nations, including those that have no official ties with the Jewish state, to strategize solutions for Gaza's population.

He told heads and representatives of civil society organizations in Washington that the Palestinians boycotted the meeting because they felt it was called for by the U.S. administration to return to the region's politics through the humanitarian door.

The six-hour meeting was convened in an ornate room of the Eisenhower office building adjacent to the White House, hosted by senior presidential adviser Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt, the president's special representative for Middle East peace talks.

He said the USA has lost its credibility and role as mediator after it recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and made a decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which prompted the Palestinian Authority to cut all contacts with the United States administration.

Fahmy pointed to his expectation that "President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas will order the formation of a commission of inquiry which will include representatives of different factions, and announce its findings before the public opinion". Ishtayeh told foreign journalists, according to AP.

On Dec. 6, Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, triggering world outcry and protests across the Palestinian territories.

He also stressed on Jordan's continued commitment to the Palestinian issue until an independent Palestinian state is established.
