White Student, Who Poisoned Black Roommate, May Avoid Criminal Record

Brianna Brochu, the former University of Hartford student who was accused of smearing a used tampon on her roommates book bag, as well as contaminating and tampering with other items that didn't belong to her, received a special kind of probation and no jail time for her actions.

It seems like that's the only real punishment she'll get.

Brochu also told authorities that she did put tampon blood on Rowe's backpack and licked Rowe's plate, fork and spoon, but denied doing anything else.

Rowe told police that Brochu "generally ignored her and treated her as a ghost", according to the warrant for Brochu's arrest.

Her roommate, Chennel Rowe, said she developed throat pain. Doctors could not find diagnose her illness and she was prescribed antibiotics. The antagonistic attitude worsened to such an extent that Rowe made a decision to switch rooms.

"While Brochu said she made up most of the claims in the Instagram posts in an attempt to "'appear amusing, '" she admitted to licking and transferring period blood onto Rowe's possessions.

The president of the state NAACP reiterated its hate-crime demand outside court, according to the Courant: "There's a system for white people and there's a system for black people". Outside the courthouse, he said, "These were two students who were placed together. who didn't like each other. and it escalated".

A University of Hartford student will have the opportunity to wipe her criminal record clean after she was handed probation by a judge in a case that has been called a hate crime.

Rowe attended the court hearing and did not oppose the probation program request Monday, saying she hoped Brochu would 'change her ways'.

18-year-old Brianna Brochu was expelled for her actions at the University of Hartford and was granted an accelerated rehabilitation that could lead to the charges of misdemeanor criminal mischief and breach of peace being erased from her criminal record.

Brochu labelling Rowe as a "Jamaican Barbie" certainly paints her questionable behaviour with vibrant racist undertones. After two years, she will be allowed to go off scot free with no black mark dogging her footsteps.

And the price Brochu pays for her conduct will last long after her court case ends, Williams said.

But that's white privilege for you.
