X-Men: Dark Phoenix reshoots aimed at reworking film's third act

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dark Phoenix will undergo significant reshoots to shore up its ending, although it's not known whether the movie's being hauled in to fix a hot mess of a finale or simply improve on an already-solid project.

The film will adapt the Dark Phoenix Saga comic book storyline where Jean Grey struggled to control and succumbed to the Phoenix Force within. To be truthful, the move isn't necessarily a bad thing because that affords the filmmakers more time for post-production, for we expect for this flick to be a visual effects spectacle.

The fact the film has come in a reported $10 million under budget, plus the busy acting schedules of its roster of A-list stars, also has us optimistic that it's more a matter of enrichment rather than renovation. Some forms of reshoots - "additional photography" or "pick ups" are other terms used sometimes - are slotted for most big-budget productions of this type.

Deadpool 2, New Mutants, and X-Men Dark Pheonix were all scheduled for release this year, but now only one of those will see the inside of a cinema in 2018 as Dark Pheonix and New Mutants have both been delayed. According to the report, director Josh Boone handed in a cut of the movie he was happy with, but Fox Studios wants New Mutants to stand out as tonally distinct as Logan and Deadpool (which is what I was hoping for); so Fox wants New Mutants even darker. Do you think the creative minds behind the film can successfully adapt the Dark Phoenix story this time?

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is now scheduled to be released in theaters on February 14, 2019.

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Evan Peters are all returning, and they'll be contending with Jessica Chastain's as yet undisclosed villain.
