A warehouse Sized Asteroid Said Hello To Earth

Yesterday, an asteroid three to six times larger than that rock came out of nowhere and passed by the Earth at a distance of 119,500 miles, about half the distance to the moon-and scientists only had a few hours' warning before it closed in.

According to NASA, it posted on its website that it is nothing as compared to asteroids which are present in between the Mars and Jupiter, whose length can spread across 580 miles.

This is the unnoticed closest asteroid approach to the Earth ever. The asteroids which are present in this belt do not pose any threat to the Earth. The asteroid was discovered just one day before it flies close to the earth surface and this is what scientists are calling as " surprise" flyby. "Hours later, amateur astronomer Michael Jäger of Weißenkirchen Austria video-recorded the space rock gliding through the southern constellation Serpens", Spaceweather.com reported.

The giant asteroid, estimated to be between 47 and 100 metres in width, was flew by Earth at a speed of 106,000 kilometres per hour.

With an estimated diameter of 157 to 361 feet (48 to 110 meters), the asteroid's impact with the Earth could have caused substantial damage. The asteroid, designated 2018 GE3, made its closest approach to Earth at around 2.41 a.m. EDT on Sunday, according to a Space.com report.

The asteroid is three to six times as big as one that broke up over Russian Federation in 2013, injuring over 1,200 people and damaging thousands of buildings up to 93 km away from the impact site, "Space.com" reported. However, an asteroid this size is capable of causing some regional damage, depending on various factors such as composition, speed, entry angle, and location of impact.

"A preliminary analysis of the orbit of 2018 GE shows this is the closest this particular space rock has come to Earth at least since 1930", EarthSky reports.
