Apple started trial production of iPhone 6s Plus in Bengaluru

After Xiaomi announced three new manufacturing units in India earlier this week, Apple has apparently begun the test production of iPhone 6s Plus - its highest selling model - in the country.

2 senior industry executives told The Economic Times that assembling the iPhone 6S Plus in India will allow Apple to lower the price of the device by 5% to 7%. This would bring the price of the iPhone 6s to the same level as that of the One Plus. So what real benefit will Apple have in producing the iPhone 6s Plus?

The price cut will make it more competitive with the Chinese smartphone company's like OnePlus and also some premium models of Samsung.

"However, the price correction may not be reflected immediately since Wistron will not be able to fully meet the entire requirement of iPhone 6s Plus in India and imports from China will continue", one source added. Emails sent to Apple India and Wistron did not elicit any response as of press time Thursday. The Indian government has raised the basic customs duty on smartphones to 20 per cent over the last few months, and as a result, Apple iPhones witnessed a 6-7 per cent hike except for the iPhone SE.

After contact manufacturer Wistron had begun assembly of iPhone SE models at its Bengaluru assembly plant a year ago, it's now the turn of the more high-end iPhone 6s Plus model to take its place. However, in the refurbished smartphone market, Apple is now the king, and India is one of those regions where such category of mobile phones are sold in massive volumes.

The tech giant has reportedly expanded its local sourcing initiative to two more parts in India, which now includes chargers, adapters and packaging boxes.

To make matters worse, the administration slapped a 10% custom duty on parts like printed circuit boards recently. In total, there are five sourcing plants which includes Finland-based Salcomp's facility in Tamil Nadu and Chinabased Shenzhen YUTO Packaging Technology plant in Bengaluru.
