Cambridge Analytica says it is 'no Bond villain'

Cambridge Analytica says it is 'no Bond villain'

At that time, Facebook allowed third-party apps to collect data on the users' friends, so the social network estimates that the volume of collected user data ballooned to 87 million people, majority in the United States.

He also accused Facebook of feigning ignorance of how their users' data was being used, saying it was "well documented that Facebook collaborates with researchers".

Aleksandr Kogan, who teaches at Cambridge University, told a British parliamentary committee that criticism of his work by Facebook showed the USA social media giant was in "PR crisis mode".

"Fundamentally, I made a mistake by not being critical about this and trusting the advice of another company", he said, adding that Cambridge Analytica had assured him nothing he did was in violation of the network's policies.

The co-founders of a Canadian firm tied to the global Facebook data controversy argued Tuesday that their seven-employee political consultancy has never broken the law - and only offers electoral support comparable to traditional door-knocking, phone canvassing and lawn signs.

The biz then encouraged him to set up his own firm, GSR, that it contracted to collect and analyse Facebook user data.

"One of the biggest points of confusion has been how accurate the personality scores we provided to SCL [CA's parent company] were", he said.

Next month, the European Union will begin enforcing its new General Data Protection Regulation, which explicitly applies to any company that uses the data of EU residents, no matter where it is based.

He told MPs: You don't need this data to do that.

Kogan also told United Kingdom lawmakers that he sold Wylie the same data he sold to Cambridge Analytica, the Financial Times reported. Facebook gives your everything available to do that.

Following the interview, Democrats from the House Judiciary and the Oversight and Government Reform committees warned about the prospect of election interference on social media and urged the panels' chairs to hold full hearings on the data scandal.

Facebook did not immediately respond to a Fast Company request for comment.

This is a lot more like going on Amazon and ordering some data as delivered.

[Image: courtesy of AppOptix] According to the study, from AppOptix, Facebook's daily user engagement rose to 61.4% within a week of the scandal, up from a five-day average of between 56% and 58% over the previous six weeks.

Cambridge Analytica said in a statement that it licensed data for only up to 30 million respondents in the US from Kogan, adding that it found the personality type data from Kogan was "less effective" than standard demographic details.

He also pointed out that his former research partner, Joseph Chancellor, still works at Facebook.

He added: They are a very open company. In fact, a new study suggests user engagement on Facebook actually spiked after the scandal broke-but not for reasons Facebook will love; in fact, it was likely because tons of users realized they'd better check their security and privacy settings. There was no kind of written agreement.

Cambridge Analytica also went on the offensive on Tuesday, attacking Mr. Wylie and insisting it had done nothing wrong.

When asked why Facebook would be so accommodating, Kogan replied that "this was something they gave their employees to stimulate them".

Ime Archibong, Facebook's vice president of product partnerships, said in a statement Kogan had a brief consulting contract with Facebook in 2015, but that the company wasn't aware of Kogan's activities with Cambridge Analytica until December 2015.

Dr Kogan told MPs this was a total fabrication.
