Coli outbreak traced to romaine lettuce

Coli outbreak traced to romaine lettuce

Since the outbreak began in late March, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has tallied a total of 35 infections across 11 states, including three cases of kidney failure. A list of the states and the number of cases in each can be found on the Case Count Map page. Sixty-nine percent of ill people are female.

Illnesses that occurred after March 27, 2018, might not yet be reported due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill with E. coli and when the illness is reported. "This takes an average of two to three weeks". The outbreak is the same potentially deadly strain of E. coli, 0157:H7, that occurred late a year ago in the USA and Canada, but the CDC does not believe it is connected with the earlier outbreak. People in the previous outbreak were infected with a different DNA fingerprint of E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.

However, Consumer Reports is advising against consumers purchasing any romaine lettuce regardless of where it's grown while the outbreak is ongoing, including unbagged romaine or hearts of romaine. No specific grower, supplier, distributors, or brand has been identified.

Consumer Reports said it would be hard for buyers to tell where the romaine was grown, which is why they are saying consumers should avoid romaine altogether until the threat passes.

"Consumers anywhere in the United States who have store-bought chopped romaine lettuce at home, including salads and salad mixes containing chopped romaine lettuce, should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick", the CDC reports.

"Consumer Reports' experts believe that it could be hard for consumers to determine where the romaine they purchase is from, which is why they believe it's best to avoid the lettuce altogether", Consumer Reports said in a release.

Fresh Food Manufacturing Co., based in Freedom, Pennsylvania, recalled 8,757 pounds of ready-to-eat salad after being notified by their lettuce supplier that it may be contaminated with E. Coli O157:H7, according to the USDA. Read CDC's advice to consumers, restaurants, and retailers.

The CDC and the US Food and Drug Administration are continuing to work with state and local health officials to further identify the source of the contaminated romaine.
