Commonwealth Games 2018, Gold Coast: Neeraj Chopra wins historic Gold in javelin

The 20-year-old World junior record holder thereafter touched a season's best of 86.47m and became India's fourth individual gold victor in Commonwealth Games history in track and field.

Both the quartermilers-relay teams failed to win a medal as the women, competing first up, could only finish seventh of 3:33.61. Chopra continued with an enthusiastic performance, throwing a season-best of 86.47, previously best was 85.94m.

With his surprise win, Chopra becomes only the third Indian man to win athletics gold at the Commonwealths, after Milkha "Flying Sikh" Singh in 1958 and Vikas Gowda in 2014.

In a high quality display, his lowest throw came at 83.48m - more than the best throw of Australia's Hamish Peacock, who claimed the silver with 82.59m.

In Saturday's final, Chopra led the field from the word go with his first throw of 85.50m.

This is the third gold medal for India in athletics at Commonwealth Games 2018 after Seema Puni and Navjeet Dhillon bagged silver and bronze medal respectively in men's discus throw event.

The 20-year-old junior world champion had made the final after achieving the qualifying mark in his very first throw on Friday.

The other Indian competing in the event, Vipin Kashana, finished fifth with a best of 77.87.

Since his path-breaking feat, Chopra, although not passing that throw, has stayed within touching distance. He won the Asian Championships gold in Bhubaneswar and took part in three Diamond League series events, finishing fifth in one of them.

Having trained without a coach and proper guidance for much of his career, he then had to deal with the reversal of Gary Calvert's quitting, under his direction, he set the national record.

"In my desperation for a personal best, I tried so hard that I tumbled over in my last two attempts", added Chopra, who is trained by former world record-holder Uwe Hohn.
