Commonwealth Games 2018: WATCH shocking moment Callum Hawkins COLLAPSES in marathon

Commonwealth Games organisers were heavily criticised for not providing sufficient medical assistance to a Scottish marathon runner who collapsed but was not attended to by paramedics for several minutes. As he lay writhing on the ground, it was the subsequent delay from medical responders to help him that sparked criticism worldwide.

"I like many others was distressed to see a wonderful athlete like Callum collapse during the closing stages of today's marathon", Peters said.

He had a lead of 41 seconds before his fall, which denied him the chance of victory on the Gold Coast. "You can not just wait at the finish line".

Callum Hawkins was just over a mile from the end of the race when he began weaving across the road and fell to the ground.

In response GOLDOC confirmed medical staff were posted at 500 metre intervals in the final kilometres of the course with radio communications.

Hawkins held a lead of nearly two minutes after two hours of running in blazing sun and temperatures of 28 degrees Celsius (82F) on the roads of the Gold Coast when he was unable to continue, weaving across the road before collapsing.

'I was also concerned about the behaviour of a small number of bystanders who chose to take images, ' he said. "This is not in keeping with the spirit of GC2018".

Australia's Michael Shelley ended up coming by two minutes later and repeating as Commonwealth Games champion (recap here: Australian runs to legend status as Scot collapses with 2km to go).

Team Scotland wrote on social media that Hawkins had been taken to hospital for monitoring, but medical staff had "no major concerns" about his condition.

Another Tanzania runner, Stephano Huche Gwandu, took a tumble as he crossed the finish line and was helped into a wheelchair.

After retaining his Commonwealth title, Shelley said he had also been struggling with the hot conditions.

"I'm just concerned for his welfare". I'm sorry if you're watching this at home, it's really distressing.

"Sometimes medical people arrive and the athlete has to make a decision as to whether they want to go on or not".

"Words can't express what we felt; having seen him take that almost two-minute lead, then he started to wobble down at the beach".

Fellow Tanzanian Saidi Juma Makula collapsed close to the finish line before being helped into an ambulance - one of seven of the 24 starters who failed to complete the race.

Shelley won the race in two hours, 16 minutes and 46 seconds with Uganda's Munyo Solomon Mutai taking silver (2:19:02) and Scotland's Robbie Simpson bronze (2:19:36).

Namibia's Helalia Johannes won the women's marathon ahead of Australian duo Lisa Weightman and Jessica Trengove.
