Erdogan Pays Tribute to Armenian Victims on Genocide Remembrance Day

Erdogan Pays Tribute to Armenian Victims on Genocide Remembrance Day

"The Armenian Genocide, also known as the 'First Genocide of the Twentieth Century, ' represented a deliberate attempt by the Ottoman Empire to eliminate all traces of a thriving, noble civilization".

Turkey has refused to recognize the killings of 1.5 million Armenians beginning in 1915 as a genocide.

While president, Obama had also used the term "Meds Yeghern" to describe the 1915 events that took place in the height of World War I. However, Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement Tuesday recognizing the genocide. Forty-eight of our USA states have recognized the Armenian Genocide, as have a dozen of our North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies - including France and Germany, the European Union, and, of course, Pope Francis. USA presidents, including Barack Obama and Donald Trump, have refused to formally recognize the genocide. "By refusing to officially recognize the Armenian genocide, America is simply not living up to its moral responsibility and undermining its leadership on human rights".

April 24th is the official day of remembrance for the Armenian Genocide, which killed one and a half million people.

The U.S. first recognized the Armenian Genocide in 1951 through a filing which was included in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Report titled: "Reservations to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide". President Ronald Reagan called it a genocide in a 1981 speech about the Holocaust; no US president since has called it genocide. We note with deep respect the resilience of the Armenian people, so many of whom built new lives in the United States and have made countless contributions to our country.

"On this day, we honor the victims and survivors of the genocide, and reaffirm our commitment to preventing future atrocities from being committed against any people", Brown's statement read.

"Once again, I remember with respect the Ottoman Armenians who lost their lives, and offer my honest condolences to their children and descendants".
