Kathua rape-murder: Resignation of Kashmir ministers accepted

Ganga and Singh submitted their resignations to the BJP's State president yesterday to save the image of the Prime Minister and the party following a controversy over their presence in a rally in support of the accused.

"Taking into consideration the situation and general perception, two ministers - in consultation with party leaders - chose to resign from their post", said Ram Madhav, National General Secretary of BJP, after chairing a meeting of office bearers in Jammu.

The crisis in the PDP-BJP coalition government over participation by two BJP ministers in a rally over the Kathua case subsided after the resignations of the two minister was accepted on Saturday.

Singh and Ganga had attracted widespread anger and criticism for attending a meeting of the Hindu Ekta Manch, a lose group formed to support the accused, which demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case. He said that the ministers resigned in order to address the fears of not only the PDP, but also the state and the nation.

Madhav said the two ministers stepped down because of the perception about them. "Nobody dictates any agenda to us", he said.

We must have "Samvedna", he stressed, adding, "the last person standing in line" is in sight of our government following the thoughts of Dr Ambedkar and Deendayal Upadhayay as "Antodaya". "We have a common agenda and we both work towards fulfilling our commitments to the people of Jammu and Kashmir".

Claiming that it was because of the BJP that the chargesheet had been readied against the Kathua accused on time, Madhav said it showed that there had been no interference or attempt to create obstacles in the inquiry by anyone.

Amid rumours that the PDP may seriously discuss the withdrawal of the party from the coalition, Chief Minister and party president Mehbooba Mufti held a meeting with all PDP lawmakers and party leaders in Srinagar. "There was never any confusion on this principled stand of the party".

"The state government, of which the BJP is also a part, will try to deliver justice". "This we have told the government already", Madhav said.

The issue had been raked by the Bar Association of Jammu as threat to the demography of Jammu. BJP state secretary Vijay Sharma, who led the Manch, "is no more our office-bearer", he said. He added that the Union Home Ministry was fully seized of the Rohingya matter, and there would be "effective steps" soon.
