Lahore HC bans airing anti-judiciary speeches of ex-PM Nawaz Sharif

The Lahore High Court directed the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Monday to prevent the broadcast of anti-judiciary remarks by disqualified Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz, and officials of the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N).

The case of the Sharif family's upscale London flats is based on a reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on the Supreme Court's directives previous year.

Imran Khan, the former cricketer and political foe of Mr Sharif, suggested... The three-member bench ordered Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz to appear in person or via their counsel before the court during the next hearing. If convicted, he can be jailed.

However, the former prime minister's son-in-law, retired Captain Muhammad Safdar, was among the attendees in the court.

Nawaz and Maryam did not attend the last two hearings of the case as they were unable to depart from Lahore due to weather condition.

"The judge authored the order against Nawaz Sharif allowing no chance of defence", the application filed by Dogar read.

The petitioner further said their tirade was going unnoticed.

According to details, new documents have been obtained by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from London which state that the Sharif family's London apartments were transferred to the possession of offshore companies Nielson and Nescoll in 1993-1995.

Justice Naqvi observed that whereas Article 19-A of the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression and the right to "fair criticism" to every citizen, the right is conditional to law and regulation.

During the hearing Pemra was slammed for not taking action on the complaints about airing of anti-judiciary content on the television channels.
