Man City crowned Premier League champions as West Brom stun Man Utd

Jose Mourinho's United team had needed to win against West Brom to keep the title race alive but surprisingly lost at home as Jay Rodriguez's header gave the league's bottom side a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

Last Saturday goals from Paul Pogba and Chris Smalling handed United a 3-2 comeback win in the Manchester Derby.

Last weekend Paul Pogba scored two second half goals to help Manchester United rally from down 2-0 and beat Manchester City 3-2, delaying their arch-rivals from clinching the Premier League title (at least for the time being).

A draw in that game would effectively confirm City as champions as well - it would leave United 15 points behind with five games remaining, while Guardiola's side also boast a far superior goal difference.

But Mourinho argued after the final whistle that the title win was inevitable, and that the exact game in which the Premier League was secured mattered little. I have never been able to retain a title and I want to see if this team has got it to carry on and be even more successful.

There were wins for Crystal Palace and Huddersfield Town in their bids to avoid relegation, while Burnley continued their charge to a Europa League place with victory over Leicester City.

He also conceded it was sweet to triumph in a country where some critics claimed his purist principles couldn't flourish.

Guardiola said he wouldn't be watching United's game at Old Trafford on Sunday, but instead would be enjoying a round of golf with his son.

"Manchester City won the title because they have more points than anybody else".

But, he need not to have anxious as West Brom's lone strike through a Jay Rodriguez's header from a Nemanja Matic's poor clearance in the United's vital area finally handed them their third title in seven years.

"He annoys me, because I know he's capable of a hundred times more", said Christophe Dugarry, a striker in France's 1998 World Cup-winning side, this week. It was a slow game and we didn't play well at all.

West Brom had lost eight of their previous nine games and last won on January 13.

That is just one of a welter of statistical feats that have led some to rank City among the Premier League's greatest ever teams.

Fuelled by the majestic form of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, City set a new Premier League record earlier this season by winning 18 successive matches.
