Manchester City seal Premier League title after Manchester United suffer shock defeat

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom, Apr 15- Manchester City were confirmed as Premier League champions without kicking a ball on Sunday as rock bottom West Brom stunned Manchester United with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

Manchester United had to at least manage a draw to keep the title race alive but they were surprised at Old Trafford when Jay Rodriguez scored with 18 minutes remaining.

United manager Jose Mourinho asked for consistency from the France worldwide this week following his two-goal performance in last weekend's win over Manchester City.

City, who rebounded from the United loss and a European exit at the hands of Liverpool by beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Wembley on Saturday, have 87 points with five games left.

It's been nearly inevitable for the whole of 2018 but Manchester City have today sealed the Premier League title without even kicking a ball on Sunday afternoon.

It's been nailed on for months now that Manchester City were destined to become Premier League winners for the third time since 2012.

Jose Mourinho slammed Pogba and his team-mates after the game, insisting they preferred to show off rather than play any real football. It was always a matter of when rather than if City would be champions after they led the way for most of the season.

"We didn't want or played simple, everything was slow, one more flick, trick, turn".

"You could see the difference in attitude to players compared to last week.

I think we deserved that punishment for sure".

The defeat came just eight days after United momentarily halted City's title celebrations with a 3-2 come-from-behind win at the Etihad.

"I knew that sooner or later they would be (champions) and if I was in their position I would be very upset if someone said they won the title because Manchester United lost against West Brom".

"You do not win titles with inconsistency, you win with quality". 'We were masters in complication.

"You win titles with consistency at every level, not just the performance level but the mental level and the day by day". By the hour mark, Mourinho had brought on attacking players Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial for central midfielders Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba but things didn't really improve. "I saw lots of people over the moon because we won against City".
