Maoists' Bodies Float In River, Toll Now Put At 27

Police said 31 Maoists were killed in a firefight Sunday after they were ambushed in the Kasnasur region.

Police said Tuesday that dozens of Maoist guerrillas had been killed in jungle raids in India's remote interior by commandos fighting the country's longest-running conflict.

At least six Maoists were gunned down in a fresh gunfight in the district, barely 36 hours after Sunday's encounter which left 16 rebels dead.

Gadchiroli (Maharashtra), April 24 (IANS) As many as 19 women, including a commander, are among 37 Maoists gunned down in two pitched battles by the Maharashtra Police in the forests of the state's Gadchiroli in the past 48 hours, eliminating at least four top commanders and virtually shattering the backbone of the rebels, a top police official said here on Tuesday evening.

Police also seized weapons and ammunition from the encampment, roughly 900 kilometres (560 miles) east of the state capital Mumbai, he added.

According to sources in the Maharastra police, the two C-60 commando teams involved in Sunday's operation were in the area since Friday night but were chasing "another lead". "Search operations have been launched in villages adjoining the borders of the encounter sites and close to the Indravati river to locate these people".

The dead Maoists are believed to be among those who managed to escape during the encounter on Sunday.

Among those killed were three divisional committee (DVC) members of CPI (Maoist), 51-year-old Srinu alias Vijendra Ramlu, 34-year-old Sainath alias Domesh Atram and Nandu.

While six Maoists were killed in the Rajaram Khanla encounter, four of them were women, Police officials said.

Search and combing operations continue, though interrupted by heavy rain and bad weather, in the entire Gadchiroli district.

Along with this, across states - Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Telangana- almost 43 Maoists were killed during the same period in eight operations.

The district is among the worst affected by the Maoist insurgency.
