MC Mary Kom wins gold medal in CWG

Gold Coast, Apr 14 (PTI) The legend of M C Mary Kom (48kg) grew larger as she added the Commonwealth Games gold to her packed medal cabinet, thrashing Northern Irelands Kristina OHara in the final here today. Mary Kom was making good use of her left jab, and she was slowly getting aggressive. Her ultra offensive approach was clearly seen, but Mary Kom turned O'Hara's lack of defense into her advantage brilliantly. The 35-year-old used all her experience to put the outcome beyond doubt.

A 2013 World Championship bronze medallist, Bajrang also won gold medals in the Commonwealth Championship in 2016 and 2017 at Singapore and Brakpan, South Africa respectively.

This is surprisingly Kom's first Commonwealth medal and that too a gold, but after the disappointments at Rio, it would serve as a big encouragement for her. It was the first time that amateur women's boxing was introduced in the Games.

On Friday, with Anish Bhanwala's gold, India went past its medal tally at Glasgow. H.S. Prannoy and P.V. Sindhu will look to shine for India in badminton on Saturday at the Commonwealth Games 2018.

Divya Kakran won bronze medal in the women's freestyle 68 kg by outplaying Bangladesh's Sherin Sultana 4-0, a victory by fall.

Table Tennis: Paddler Sharath Kamal will play both the men's singles and mixed doubles quarter-finals, as he aims to make it a memorable Gold Coast campaign, after winning men's team gold. Pooja had defeated Joseph Tiako of Cameroon 11-5 in the semi-finals.
