New XZ2 Premium has Sony's brightest ever 4K HDR smartphone screen

"Given the strength of the existing Xperia XZ range, specifically the XZ2, XZ2 Compact, and XZ Premium, there are now no plans for widespread ranging of the handset [XZ2 Premium] in the United Kingdom and Ireland".

The Japanese company says its "AUBE fusion image signal processor" is going to cut down on noise, as shooting this high on a phone would usually produce little more than an eye-sore, but we'll have to wait and see.

Elsewhere, the dual-camera can also capture portrait mode, which Sony brands Bokeh Mode.

That, Sony promises, is the sort of sensitivity that until now would have required an interchangeable-lens camera.

Some of the added features include a Motion Eye dual camera setup with an ISO rating of 12800 for HD quality video recording.

Up to 4K video recording is supported, with HDR. The front camera, however, is a 13MP shooter with F2.0 aperture. The smartphone comes loaded with a 5.8-inch 4K HDR display with a screen resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels.

The rest of the phone is fairly familiar territory. It uses Sony's X-Reality upscaling technology, too, capable of turning non-HDR footage into HDR. The flagship is armed with a Snapdragon 845 coupled with 6GB of RAM. The latter analyzes audio playback in movies and games in real-time, and then whips up custom vibrations to emphasize the soundtrack. It features High-Resolution Audio (LPCM, FLAC, ALAC, DSD), DSEE HX, LDAC, Clear Audio+, Stereo speakers with S-Force Front Surround, Stereo Recording, Qualcomm® aptX™ HD audio, Automatic Headphone Optimisation and more.

Also like the XZ2 is the design.

The Xperia XZ2 Premium comes with Quick Charge 3.0 support for its 3,540 mAh power cell. What that means is that the front and back of the smartphone is covered with Gorilla Glass 5, with the side frames made out of metal. IP65/68 water resistance are on board, so you don't have to worry about getting the phone wet. The Huawei P20 Pro - sadly still not yet confirmed for a United States release - has been wowing reviewers with its triple camera array, for example. "As a comparison, the ceramic-based 6.4" Xiaomi Mi MIX weighs a much lower 209 grams and even the current XZ Premium is lighter at 195g. It had the honor of being named as the "Best New Smartphone at MWC 2017".

We'll know for sure later this year, when the new phone hits stores.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium is set to go on sale this summer in other parts of the world, so if you're desperate to get your hands on the Xperia XZ2 Premium you'll have to look into potential imports in a couple of months' time.
