Outrage after kidnapped Mexican students dissolved in acid

Outrage after kidnapped Mexican students dissolved in acid

Javier Salomón Aceves Gastélum, Daniel Díaz, and Marco Ávalo were last seen on March 19 in the municipality of Tonala, in the state of Jalisco, filming a class project during their Spring Break.

Three vanished film students whose case had become emblematic of Mexico's 30,000 missing people were killed after being caught unaware in the midst of a drug gang turf battle, officials say.

Authorities in the western Mexico state of Jalisco said they believe three film students missing since last month were killed and dissolved in acid.

The bodies were dissolved in acid at a different location, at which investigators discovered 46 barrels of sulfuric acid.

At least eight members of the Jalisco Nueva Generacion Cartel were keeping an eye on the house, and chose to kidnap and murder them, thinking they were part of the rival group.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel members were disguised as police officers and kidnapped the three students when their vehicle broke down nearby. They had been working on a film project just outside the city... Police have stressed that the students had no known link to organized crime.

Prosecutors said they arrested two people in connection with the deaths and believe a total of eight people were involved.

"Without knowing it, the students were in a very unsafe place which was being watched by hit men from the New Generation cartel", the prosecutor's office said. - Three Mexican film students who went missing five weeks ago were kidnapped, tortured, killed and likely dissolved in acid, investigators said Monday, a gruesome end to a case that triggered vehement protests.

With nearly 8,000 people killed in Mexico since the start of 2018, the news of the murder of three young film students Monday has made Mexicans say "enough".

The Jalisco Attorney General's Office said two men have been arrested and there are arrest orders for four others in the case.

More than 33,000 people are now missing in Mexico and organized crime is expected to be a major issue in the current presidential campaign.
