Police Responding to 'Ongoing Situation' at Lee Correctional Institution

One of South Carolina's most risky prisons was secured early Monday after a "mass casualty incident" involving multiple inmates at several housing units, officials said.

At least seven inmates are dead and 17 other people are injured after hours-long rioting at a maximum-security prison in SC, according to the state's corrections department. The incident started at around 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

The department of corrections says all law enforcement officers who responded to the prison are safe and accounted for. The department added that the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) were assisting prison officials in its investigation.

Lee County Fire and Rescue tweeted early Monday that it and several other EMS crews responded to a "mass casualty" situation.
