President Trump isn't at Barbara Bush's funeral - here's why

The First Lady's memorial service, held in St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas, was attended by her family, including former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, and her daughter-in-law Laura Bush. "It does make me sad, because she's such an incredible example, and I don't know how many more people there are to be that kind of example".

More than a thousand guests attended a private funeral for former first lady Barbara Bush Saturday, including four former presidents and three former first ladies, as well as the current first lady.

In a Twitter post, Trump said his "thoughts and prayers are with the entire Bush family". "In memory of First Lady Barbara Bush, there is a remembrance display located at her portrait in the Center Hall of the White House".

Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn also missed the funeral. Jeb Bush said his mother's response was, "I get that a lot".

For those wishing to pay their respects, they may do so between noon and midnight at the church. Sitting presidents have rarely in recent decades gone to the funerals of former first ladies, according to FactCheck.org, a project of The Annenberg Public Policy Center in Philadelphia.

Following the service at St. Martin's, Mrs.

Obama and Clinton will join former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush at the funeral. As the debates began, Trump expanded his criticism to include fellow Republican candidate Jeb Bush, who he would go on to mock and label "low energy" for the rest of the election. A message sent by the White House earlier this week said he would not attend "to avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush family and friends attending the service".

St. Martin's Episcopal Church bills itself as the largest Episcopal church in the country, but when George H.W. and Barbara Bush started attending, they were a congregation of just a few hundred worshipers.

The private funeral will be attended by 1,500 relatives, friends and dignitaries but will be nationally televised, the Times reported. Reflecting the celebratory spirit of the ceremony, Meacham drew roaring laughter from the guests, relaying self-deprecating anecdotes about Bush's preference for another author, John Grisham, and her tendency to lovingly prod her children.

Bush, only the second woman in United States history to have had a husband and son elected President, died Tuesday at the age of 92 at her home in Houston.

The former president was helped in with a wheelchair behind his sons, former President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, and other Bush relatives.
