Rapper Kendrick Lamar Wins Pulitzer Prize For Music

"It means that the jury and the board judging system worked as it's supposed to - the best work was awarded a Pulitzer Prize".

Lamar, 30, is the first rapper to win the prestigious award.

"For lyrical and courageous commentary that is rooted in Alabama but has a national resonance, in scrutinizing corrupt politicians, championing the rights of women and calling out hypocrisy for criticism".

In the arts, prizes are awarded in seven categories, including fiction, drama and music.

"For deeply sourced, relentlessly reported coverage in the public interest that dramatically furthered the nation's understanding of Russian interference in the 2016 election and its connections to the Trump campaign".

The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa, California, won the breaking news award for coverage of the wildfires that swept through California's wine country last fall.

Also nominated as finalists: John Woodrow Cox of The Washington Post for stories about gun violence told through the eyes of children, and Norimitsu Onishi of The New York Times for the final days of Japan's isolated elderly population. "This is a big moment for hip-hop music and a big moment for the Pulitzers".

Kelly made the photo on his last day at the newspaper before moving on to a job at a brewery.

The Poetry prize was scooped by Frank Bidart's Half-Light, while Prairie Fires by Caroline Fraser was triumphant for Biography.

Frank Bidart's "Half-Light" was the poetry victor.

But in a year when the media has been galvanised by digging into Trump's chaotic presidency, Lamar's award for his album Damn also stood out as the rapper from Compton, California became the first rap artist to win a Pulitzer in music. He is the first ever non-classical or jazz artist to receive this honorable award.

The Pulitzer board said the album was a virtuosic song collection that captured the modern African American life.
