Syria air defences 'shoot down' missiles over two military airbases

Syrian state-run television said Syria's air defenses have confronted a new "aggression", shooting down missiles over the area of Homs in the country's center.

Syrian state-run television says missiles targeted Shayrat air base in Homs province and another base northeast of the capital, Damascus.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after the US, British, and French strikes in Syria his country will continue "to move against Iran in Syria".

A top Russian chemical weapons protection expert, Igor Kirillov said experts from Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons are set to visit Douma tomorrow.

The source of the missiles is still unknown.

Unconfirmed reports said that Syrian air defenses had also intercepted three missiles aimed at Dumair military airport north east of Damascus.

Reuters cited Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon as saying that "there is no US military activity in that area at this time".

Those attacks were retaliation for a suspected chemical weapons attack that they blamed on the Syrian government.

A local reporter for The Arab News said Israeli warplanes were spotted in Syrian airspace just before the missiles were reported.

"There is no United States military activity in that area at this time", a Pentagon spokesman, Eric Pahon, said.

Big explosions were heard on Monday night near the same air base, southeast of the city of Homs, and in eastern Qalamoun near Damascus where two other air bases are located, the Syrian Observatory for Human rights reported.

Israel has struck Syrian army locations many times in the course of the conflict, hitting convoys and bases of Iranian-backed militias that fight alongside Syrian President Bashar al Assad's forces.
