Syria's Assad tells Russian lawmakers Western strikes were act of aggression

He claimed his use of the term was intentional and that he knew the "Fake News Media" would seize on his use of it.

Trump tweeted "Mission Accomplished" on Saturday after U.S., French and British warplanes and ships launched more than 100 missiles almost unopposed by Syrian air defenses.

Haley has been one of the strongest voices accusing Russian Federation of enabling the Syrian government in its use of chemical weapons in the civil war that is now in its seventh year.

In May 2003, less than two months after the US military launched its invasion and occupation of Iraq, President George W. Bush arrived on USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the co-pilot's seat of a Navy fighter jet.

"Major combat operations in Iraq have ended", Bush said, the infamous "Mission Accomplished" banner hovering over him. The Pentagon said it gave no explicit warning. "We're taking it all back".

"Everything that has strained the relationship is on Russia's side", she said, adding that the USA hopes for improved relations with Moscow, but that "we're not going to put up with bad behavior to get it". Officials said this did not include giving Russian advance notice of where or when allied airstrikes would happen.

"Many were excited there is finally something happening, that the (Syrian President Bashar) Assad regime will see some consequences, but other people were quite anxious about civilian casualties, further destruction of Syria", Khatib said.

Russian Federation and Iran called the use of force by the United States and its allies a "military crime" and "act of aggression". Haley noted that Russian Federation has vetoed six resolutions in the U.N. Security Council regarding chemical weapons.

In a separate interview, Haley told CBS News that new sanctions against Russian Federation, which has forces in Syria supporting the Assad regime, would be announced Monday that would "go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons use".

In an indication that the West, too, would prefer to lower tensions, the United States and Britain both reiterated that their military action on Saturday was not aimed at Assad, Putin's ally, only at his use of chemical weapons. The U.S. says it suspects that sarin gas also was used. But they have refrained from targeting Assad's government, apart from a volley of USA missiles previous year.

Although officials said the singular target was Assad's chemical weapons capability, his air force, including helicopters he allegedly has used to drop chemical weapons on civilians, were spared. In a US military action a year ago in response to a sarin gas attack, the Pentagon said missiles took out almost 20 percent of the Syrian air force.

"We did a strike a year ago for that same objective and it was deemed a success", but the Syrian government continued to use chemical weapons, King said.

Asked about Trump's "Mission Accomplished" assertion, White said it pointed to the successful targeting of three Syrian chemical weapons sites.

"There is still a residual element of the Syrian program that is out there", McKenzie said, adding, "I'm not going to say they're going to be unable to continue to conduct a chemical attack in the future".

"Well, they clearly failed and I think that ought to be pointed out", Hill said.

Assad's Barzah research and development center in Damascus was destroyed, McKenzie said. "It does not exist anymore".

Senior Russian military officials said on Saturday that Syria's air defenses, which are mostly made up of Soviet-era systems, had shot down 71 of the Western missiles.

Hill says after this attack there needs to be a renewed effort at diplomacy.

"This was very strong attack on the chemical weapons program". "We can't control what a country does to its people".

Bashar Jaafari, Syria's envoy to the United Nations, said the US, UK and France were "liars, spoilers and hypocrites" who exploited the United Nations "to pursue your policy of interference and colonialism".

Air missile fire is seen over Damascus after a US attack on Syria on April 14.
