Tamil Nadu: Professor detained for 'luring' students, government orders high-powered inquiry

The lecturer was alleged to have made the overtures a month ago. An audio clip of Nirmala Devi trying to persuade her pupils to gratify sexual urges of high ranking officials of the university had gone viral on Sunday leading to college authorities placing her under suspension.

Hours after a complaint was lodged by the college and a women's association, police questioned the lecturer at her home and detained her.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu's main opposition party DMK and academics of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) are wary of the committees formed to probe the scandal, which involves an assistant professor of an Aruppukkottai college.

Following a report submitted by the Madurai Kamaraj University over the matter, Governor Banwarilal Purohit, also the Chancellor of state run universities in the state on Monday announced a "high powered inquiry" by retired IAS officer R.Santhanam.

She informs them how the officials providing these opportunities are someone of the Governor's stature and this would mean a lot of money for them if they take it up. She was also booked under Section 65 of the Information Technology Act.

According to The Hindu, while the professor could not be contacted, she revealed to a news channel that her the whole conversation had been twisted by her students and extracting sexual favours from them was not her intention. When the students refused to acquiesce to her proposition, Nirmala Devi asked them to not be hasty and take a few days to think it through. An official of the college said she was suspended after they received a complaint from students on March 19. "The higher official I am referring to is not the governor, the old man, but someone of that stature", she said.
