Two Italians due in court charged with attacking Liverpool fan

20-year-old Filippo Lombardi was been charged with violent disorder and wounding/ inflicting grievous bodily harm.

A Liverpool fan who was attacked by fans of AS Roma before last night's Champions League semi-final has been named as Sean Cox.

These have all arisen following a comprehensive reconnaissance undertaken before the first leg by senior club officials and Merseyside Police, who have confirmed that their own officers will also be on the ground in Rome.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that detectives have charged two Italian men following an incident in Anfield on Tuesday, 24 April in which a 53-year-old man was seriously injured".

The wife of Mr Cox has travelled to Liverpool to be with him, while his grown-up children remain in Ireland awaiting further news. Two men have been charged in relation to the incident. Charges instead of violent disorder and GBH.

A fundraising site has been set up to support Mr Cox and his family.

The Meath native was enjoying a drink with his brother outside the Albert Pub before the Merseysiders' clash with Roma when the pair were descended upon by a gang of Italian supporters who attacked with belts and hammers. This morning over €26,000 had been raised with a newly extended target of €30,000.

The fund was set up by Emmet Kavanagh, an admin on the Irish Liverpool Reds page on Facebook, of which Mr Cox, a married father-of-three, is a member.

He will appear at South Sefton Magistrates Court on Thursday.

"I had chose to set up this page to help raise funds to cover Sean's medical expenses and expenses incurred by his family to help them to stay by his side".

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Sean and his family, and we hope that they get the privacy and space they need".

"Once the money is raised I plan on withdrawing it by cheque/bank draft and presenting it to either Sean and/or his family".
