Winter weather advisory in effect for Cortland area through Sunday afternoon

Environment Canada is predicting freezing rain and ... wait for it ... an ice storm this weekend.

A winter weather advisory is in effect through 9 p.m. Sunday for northern Rhode Island, along with parts of eastern and southeastern MA, the weather service says.

"As the low gets closer, brisk northeasterly winds will pump in cold arctic air, forcing temperatures to fall to near or below the zero degree mark on Saturday". One to 3 inches of snow and sleet are expected in Western New York, and up to 5 inches in the Adirondacks.

Rain will change to freezing rain on Saturday - you can expect to see it into the evening hours.

Wintry mix precipitation is likely Sunday night and snow possible Monday.

Officials said drivers should slow down and be cautious on the slippery roads.

Temperatures are expected to warm above freezing Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service also issued a hazardous weather outlook, with a forecast that calls for freezing rain that will turn to sleet.

Total ice accumulations ranging from 0.25" to 0.75"+ are possible, especially over higher elevations.
