Woolworths supermarkets hit by IT outage

Woolworths supermarkets hit by IT outage

Woolworths has not yet confirmed the exact cause of the problems. Many have left full trolleys behind.

"Shoppers have been told to leave groceries in baskets in the aisle", one customer wrote on Twitter.

"The registers are now coming back online in our stores".

Tyson Whelan, a journalism student at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, said on Twitter a manager in East Doncaster, Victoria, told him "all the registers are out across the state".

"We can confirm that an IT issue impacted registers in our supermarkets for a short period of time this afternoon", they said.

At Haymarket, in Sydney, staff shut the store and were turning people away, telling them to "come back in about an hour".

Stores temporarily closed in response to the outage. "We apologise for any inconvenience caused".

The technical glitch hit about half of Woolworths' 995 Australian stores and attached BWS liquor outlets for about 30 minutes on Monday afternoon.

Shortly after 4pm, the issue began affecting all registers across the country.

The ABC reached out to Woolworths for comment.
