23 missing as boat capsizes in Godavari river

The district authorities reached the accident site along with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to conduct rescue operations.

Rescuers were searching for survivors Wednesday after a river ferry capsized in heavy winds in rural south India, leaving anywhere from 10 to 40 people missing. So far, 17 people have been rescued while 23 people are still missing.

The incident occurred near Manturu in Devipatnam block of East Godavari district around 5 p.m.

Last year, a boat accident in Vijayawada on the Krishna river claimed as many as 21 lives.

At least 20 persons swam ashore.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N China Rajappa on Tuesday spoke to East Godavari district officials over the phone and enquired about the incident.

According to East Godavari Collector Karthikeya Mishra, who was rushing to the spot, the boat was coming from Kondamodalu (East) and proceeding to Polavaram (West).

The boat's owner, Mohammad Khaja, surrendered, police in Devipatnam said. Near Varapalli, the driver tried to turn the boat but tilted to one side due to the high speed winds and capsized immediately, " Misra said. "I pray for the safety of those missing", he tweeted.
