Arsenal next manager: Mikel Arteta expected to be appointed this month

The former Everton and Gunners midfielder will replace Arsene Wenger, who has been the Gunners leading man for 22 years, winning a total of 17 trophies during his tenure.

Mikel Arteta is expected to be unveiled as the new Arsenal manager this month after the club made it clear that Patrick Vieira is not seriously in their thoughts.

So prospective manager Arteta is eager for his compatriot to take up a coaching role with the club, joining the likes of Jens Lehmann and Per Mertesacker as ex-players who have returned to Arsenal behind the scenes.

The search has begun for Wenger's successor after his 22-year association ended with a win over Huddersfield Town on Sunday and the north London outfit are hopefully of naming a new manager before the start of the World Cup in Russian Federation.

'So that's why I say yes, Patrick Vieira is ready to manage Arsenal'.

Press Association Sport understands a number of Arsenal's backroom staff have followed Wenger in leaving as the club prepare for life beyond the Frenchman.

Vieira is also a firm favourite with Gunners' fans, having helped drive Wenger's Invincibles team through their unbeaten league season of 2003/2004.

'He is doing very well with New York City, and he told me the job is very hard and difficult.

Meanwhile, Pires and Vieira were teammates for six years at Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger has reiterated he will not take another job in the Premier League as it would feel like a betrayal of Arsenal.
