Bale: Tiger Woods is the greatest of all

Bale: Tiger Woods is the greatest of all

It's the Players Championships in the U.S.; I haven't tipped Tiger Woods but I feel he is close to winning soon. Tiger Woods' weekend plans were as unstable as his iron play Friday.

Woods struggled with accuracy and distance control during a steamy day on the Stadium Course. He made the cut on the number (1-under 143) after a 71 in the easier morning conditions.

On day two at golf's unofficial fifth major, Simpson emerged as a runaway leader courtesy of a course record-equalling nine-under-par 63. I had some chances that I didn't take advantage of, but I got up-and-down a couple of times and chipped in, so it was okay.

Reed has never really been a factor at The Players, but with his major breakthrough behind him, we expect the floodgates to open.

But standing on the 17th tee after a remarkable run of six straight birdies, Simpson needed just two more birdies to do exactly that.

So Woods has some work to do to stick around Sunday. We have got the other three major championships, we've got everything else to play for, so there's a lot of golf to play. A week after his putter let him down, his approach shots were his biggest problem.

"Unfortunately, the part of the ball that was showing was just all the white and dimples", said Fowler. I feel like I've played a little bit better here as I've gone along, and once I started to be a little bit more conservative, I started to top-10 it and give myself half a chance. But this is just part of the job. I actually put a lot of it down to that and I've learnt to like the golf course'.

In his third round at the THE PLAYERS Championship, Nick Watney hit 12 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation, finishing at 2 under for the tournament. He ended up making par each time.

It got Simpson, too, and in some ways, in a more painful fashion than if he'd just shanked one into the water (always a possibility with Webb, whose swing lends itself to a good shank now and then.) That NBC had cued up the #59watch in the bottom right of the screen didn't help matters, either. "I didn't have much of what I wanted".

He also missed the cut with Ryan Palmer in the team event at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans in his last start, where Spieth hit shots into the water on the last two holes in the second round and they missed the cut by one shot.

Next best of the Australian contingent is Adam Scott, the 2004 Players champion, who has picked up four shots through 17 holes to climb to seven under the card. He managed to get on the green from there, but missed an 8-footer for par. In short, he is playing at his best and close to getting into the PGA Tour. Woods, 42, finished in a tie for seventh when the Scottish venue hosted the 1999 Open, then joint 12th in 2007.

Those miscues were huge for Woods.
