England announces 12-man squad for first test match against Pakistan

Smith said that the youngster had made an excellent start to his first-class career and added: "He has impressed everyone with his performances for Somerset and when he has been given opportunities with England representative teams.

Somerset spinner Dom Bess has earned a maiden call-up in the 12-man England squad for the opening Test of the two-match series against Pakistan, beginning at the Lord's on May 24.

Reflecting on Bess' inclusion, national selector Ed Smith said that the uncapped spinner has been roped in the squad as a replacement for left-arm spinner Jack Leach, who broke his thumb recently.

Joe Root (captain), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Dom Bess, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Alastair Cook, Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, Mark Stoneman, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

Bess recalled the moment his phone rang on Tuesday morning, with an unexpected voice on the other end.

"I was in IKEA with my girlfriend".

'I've just got a new house so we were looking for some sofas and I was having an argument with my missus! I didn't have his number so I didn't know who it was. "However, and this is what I said to him...he has not produced the runs he should have done". I couldn't quite believe it'.

"The first person I called after I got the news was my dad ... straightaway".

Leach made his Test debut during the second Test against New Zealand in March to April and fared pretty well, especially in the second innings, where he took two wickets. Luckily I'm very good mates with him and we work very well at Somerset.

"I'm only 20, but this is something I've always dreamed about since I was a child".

While Bess has received an England call after just 16 first-class appearances, Buttler is back in the frame for a 19th cap after a break of nearly 18 months but on the back of his brilliant Indian Premier League form. "I'd wear the Three Lions supporting them as a kid and pretend to play for England when I played with my cousins and Grandad. Jos is playing with great confidence and flair, and he will bring unique qualities to the Test team", he said.

Vince averaged 26.88 against the Baggy Greens and, but averaged 47 in the one Test he played against the Black Caps, in which he scored an encouraging 76.
