German coach in a fix over World Cup squad announcement

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Neuer was named in Low's provisional 27-man party for Russian Federation 2018 on Tuesday despite not playing since September following foot surgery, although he has now returned to full training.

Goalkeepers: Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen), Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona), Kevin Trapp (Paris Saint-Germain).

Joachim Low has penned a contract extension with the German football Association (DFB) to keep him in charge of the national team until 2022.

"The day the nominations are revealed is always a bit split", Germany coach Joachim Low told reporters, according to the team website.

Manuel Neuer's fitness will be Germany's biggest question to answer ahead of the World Cup, but in case he is fit, there is no question as to who will don the No. 1 jersey for the defending champions.

The winger missed the 2014 tournament in Brazil, despite being named in the initial squad, after sustaining an ankle injury in the team's warm-up win over Armenia.

"Marco is a special weapon and has a lot of strong attributes - speed, instinct, feeling for the spaces, game intelligence".

Another of Low's assistants - Marcus Sorg - and general manager Oliver Bierhoff have both inked fresh contracts through to 2024, meanwhile.

Germany will start their World Cup campaign on 17 June, with Mexico, Sweden and South Korea in their group F. "We want to see him play the way he did at the European Championship (in 2012)", he said.

Loew took over after the 2006 World Cup in Germany and has led his country to at least the semi-finals in all of the five major tournaments for which he has been at the helm.
