'High school basketballer' arrested after real age comes to light

Gilstrap-Portley was discovered when a former coach identified him as a player at North Mesquite High School earlier this decade.

Gilstrap-Portley lived a double life as a teenager for nine months - even dating a 14-year-old - just so he could play high school basketball again, school officials said.

The district says they try to be sensitive to homeless students, which they say Gilstrap-Protley was also claiming to be.

Sidney Bouvier Gilstrap-Portley was arrested Friday night on charges of tampering with government records. Still, the thought of a 25-year old "dating" anyone while posing as a high schooler is terrifying.

Gilstrap-Portley transferred to Hillcrest High School in October, where he played for the Panthers and allegedly dated a 14-year-old old girl, reported KXAS, an NBC affiliate in Fort Worth, Texas.

He claimed to have been left homeless by Hurricane Harvey after approaching Skyline and then Hilcrest High School.

Still, Hinojosa empathizes with parents' concerns: "You send your kid to be safe at school and to participate in extracurricular activities and this should not happen".

Gilstrap-Portley is not the only one being penalized, so is the team.

Sidney Gilstrap-Portley, who enrolled in a Dallas ISD school as Rashun Richardson.

To fans of Hillcrest High's varsity basketball team, its new star player must have seemed like a gift from above.

"I'm upset, frustrated, angry and sad at the same time", she said in an interview with the Dallas Morning News.

The woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she didn't approve of her daughter's relationship with the man they both knew as the 17-year-old Rashun.

The woman said she only learned about the new accusation when a detective called her on Monday. The UIL is monitoring the investigation into this and says any games involving Gilstrap-Portley could be forfeited according to their policies. "When we had the issue of the Hurricane Harvey in the Houston-area, he took advantage of that and portrayed himself as a victim of that event and enrolled himself in one of our schools".

The mother says that her daughter insists that the two did not have a sexual relationship.

"He was an average player and a good kid, I'm surprised", Randall said.
