Iran's Foreign Minister in Brussels to save the nuclear agreement

Iran's Foreign Minister in Brussels to save the nuclear agreement

Trump announced last week he was removing the United States from the nuclear agreement, and at a rally following his decision to exit the deal, Trump said he still hoped to make a better agreement.

Trump has said the U.S. would be reinstating the anti-Iran bans lifted under the JCPOA and also slapping the "highest level" of economic sanctions on Tehran, prompting anger among other parties to the Iran deal, which unanimously denounced Washington and vowed to stay committed to their side of the deal.

European officials have said they are looking for ways to help their companies escape the brunt of the US sanctions.

But Bolton didn't rule out sanctions for European companies doing business with Iran.

But in an interview on ABC's "This Week" program, Bolton said: "That's not the policy of the administration. It depends on the conduct of other governments".

"The lifting of nuclear-related sanctions and the normalization of trade and economic relations with Iran constitute essential parts of the agreement", she said, "and we agreed to this end to deepen our dialogue at all levels".

An Odoxa poll published last week said that 67 per cent of the French think that Europe should ignore Mr Trump and maintain its commercial ties with Iran.

Washington has long complained that the nuclear deal does nothing to stop Iran's ballistic missile programme or its interference in conflicts across the Middle East from Syria to Yemen.

"The focus of attention was on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) regarding the Iranian nuclear program following the United States' pullout from the agreement", the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

British Prime Minister Theresa May and Mr Trump agreed in a phone call that talks were needed to discuss how USA sanctions on Iran would affect foreign companies operating in the country.

A French government official told reporters earlier this week that the USA practice of punishing foreign companies operating in foreign countries like Iran "is a real problem".

Germany - along with France and Britain - has said it remains committed to the nuclear deal.

The deal, painstakingly negotiated over more than a decade, lifted punishing economic sanctions on Iran in return for it abandoning its nuclear ambitions. The tour has already taken him to Beijing and Moscow.

"We hope recent events will lead us not to trust in the West and even Europeans", he said Sunday, according to the conservative-linked Fars news agency.

Zarif will meet his counterparts from France, Great Britain and Germany.

Trump's action has been met with dismay among America's allies in Europe and Asia and with scathing criticism and opprobrium in the U.S. political circles and the liberal press.

"The only way to avoid pain from these sanctions is negotiating with the USA, but the instruments are not easy to find", Volker Treier, deputy managing director of Germany's Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, said in an interview.

Trump's abrogation of the JCPOA will nearly certainly fuel the downward spiral of confrontation in the Middle East, while further complicating matters on the Korean Peninsula.

It also demanded that Iran cease supplying weapons to the Houthi rebels, who have been at war with Tehran's archenemy Saudi Arabia, end cyberattacks against the USA and its allies, stop menacing US military ships in the Persian Gulf and abandon its rhetoric about destroying Israel.

Meanwhile, the United States imposed sanctions on Iran's central bank governor, Valiollah Seif, and Iraq-based Al-Bilad Islamic Bank for "moving millions of dollars" for Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps, as Washington seeks to cut off funding for what it says is Iran's malign activities in the Middle East.
